The primary differences are its wider remote sensor range (-64°C to 191°C), requiring attention to range conversion during software reads, and its use of the SMBus communication interface. The original part was compatible with both I2C and SMBus, so it is necessary to verify that the host controller fully supports the SMBus protocol timing, particularly timeout restrictions. Upon confirming communication compatibility, the TMP431 is a superior performance upgrade as a replacement.
