LM358ST Substitution Conclusion It may only serve as an emergency substitute in non‑critical DC or low‑frequency circuits (well below 100kHz) where performance requirements are extremely relaxed, though with a significant risk of performance degradation. The key differences compared to the MC33078DGKT lie in bandwidth/speed (gain‑bandwidth product: 800kHz vs. 16MHz) and slew rate (0.6V/µs vs. 7V/µs), which differ by more than an order of magnitude. The LM358ST is entirely incapable of handling the mid‑to‑high‑frequency signals or fast transients required by the original design, leading to severe signal distortion. Moreover, its input offset voltage (2mV vs. 150µV) is over ten times worse, introducing non‑negligible errors in DC amplification or precision measurement applications. Although it offers lower quiescent current and is automotive‑qualified, these advantages cannot compensate for the lack of critical performance. Therefore, substitution is not recommended in the vast majority of cases.
2. LM2904YST Substitution Conclusion Similar to the LM358ST, it is not recommended as a direct replacement. It inherits all the key performance limitations of the LM358ST: very low bandwidth/speed (700kHz) and slew rate (0.6V/µs), along with a high input offset voltage of 2mV, making it equally unsuitable for applications involving mid‑to‑high frequencies, fast response, or precision amplification. Its main distinction from the LM358ST is a slightly lower output drive current (30mA vs. 37mA/40mA), which may become an additional limitation when driving heavy loads. Although it is also automotive‑qualified and offered in a compatible package, the substantial gap in core AC performance and DC accuracy relative to the original part renders substitution largely impractical. It should only be considered for extremely undemanding, non‑critical, low‑speed applications.
