1. AP2161SG-13 Substitution Conclusion
The AP2161SG-13 can be considered a viable substitute based on its core function as a single-channel high-side power switch and key parameters such as operating voltage and package. However, several critical differences require evaluation.
First, the output stage changes from an N-channel to a P-channel MOSFET. While the gate drive logic remains inverting, the internal structure differs. Typically, a P-channel device exhibits a slightly higher on-resistance (Rds_on) for a comparable silicon area. In this case, the 95mΩ Rds_on (vs. the original's 70mΩ) will result in increased conduction voltage drop and power dissipation under identical load currents.
Second, the AP2161SG-13 provides a Status Flag output and Reverse Current protection. These are enhanced features beneficial for system diagnostics and preventing current backflow. However, if the original design does not utilize these pins, they must be properly terminated (e.g., left floating or pulled up).
Third, its rated maximum continuous output current is 1A, exceeding the original's 500mA specification. This offers greater current headroom.
In applications where the load current does not exceed 500mA, the marginally higher conduction loss is acceptable, and the new feature pins are correctly managed, this device can serve as a replacement.
2. AP2181SG-13 Substitution Conclusion
The feasibility of substituting with the AP2181SG-13 is highly similar to that of the AP2161SG-13, but with distinct advantages. It shares all key differentiating points: a P-channel output stage (95mΩ Rds_on), Status Flag, and Reverse Current protection.
Its most significant improvement is the increased rated maximum continuous output current of 1.5A. This provides greater current margin than both the original part and the AP2161SG-13, offering enhanced robustness against inrush currents or potential future load increases. Notably, its on-resistance is identical to the 1A version, resulting in equivalent power loss at the same current.
As a substitute, aside from evaluating the minor implications of the P-channel topology, it demonstrates superior current drive capability and safety margin. Therefore, the AP2181SG-13 represents the more favorable alternative of the two.
