1. LM86CIMMX/NOPB Substitution Conclusion Direct substitution is not recommended. The key differences between the LM86 and the original EMC1422 lie in operating temperature range and measurement accuracy. The LM86 supports both local and remote temperature sensing from 0°C to 85°C, which is significantly narrower than the EMC1422’s local range of –40°C to 125°C and remote range of –64°C to 191°C. Consequently, the LM86 cannot operate reliably below 0°C or above 85°C, severely limiting its use in industrial, automotive, or extended commercial temperature applications. Moreover, its ±3°C accuracy is notably inferior to the EMC1422’s ±1°C, which may lead to insufficient control threshold margin or false alarms in systems requiring precise temperature monitoring or control. Although the two devices are compatible in digital interface (SMBus), supply voltage, and package footprint, the substantial degradation in these critical performance parameters restricts the LM86 to cost‑ and power‑sensitive applications with mild operating environments and relaxed accuracy requirements. It cannot serve as a full‑functional replacement.
2. LM90CIMMX/NOPB Substitution Conclusion Direct substitution is not recommended. The LM90 shares the same temperature range limitation as the LM86 (0°C to 85°C) and therefore likewise cannot cover the wide‑temperature application scenarios of the original EMC1422. Furthermore, the LM90’s accuracy is further reduced to ±4°C, the poorest among all compared devices. This lower reliability and consistency in temperature readings necessitate larger safety margins in system design and may fail to meet the original temperature‑monitoring accuracy requirements. Although its feature set (e.g., programmable limits, shutdown mode) and physical interface (SMBus, 8‑MSOP) are similar to the original part, the severe deficiencies in core sensing performance—temperature range and accuracy—limit the LM90 to applications with the lowest temperature measurement demands. It is not a qualified substitute for the EMC1422.
