While it shares interface compatibility (SMBus), supply voltage range (3.0V to 3.6V), and package (8-TSSOP) with the original part, there are critical performance discrepancies. The LM86's local and remote temperature measurement range is limited to 0°C to 85°C. In contrast, the original EMC1072 supports a local range of -40°C to 125°C and a significantly wider remote range (-64°C to 191°C). Consequently, the LM86 is unsuitable for environmental monitoring below 0°C or above 85°C. Furthermore, its specified accuracy (±3°C) is notably inferior to the EMC1072's best-case accuracy (±1°C), which would introduce greater absolute error in system temperature readings. Substitution may only be considered in constrained applications where the temperature range is non-critical and the reduced accuracy is acceptable.

For applications relying on precise temperature monitoring for functions like overtemperature protection, fan control, or system performance throttling, this level of inaccuracy can readily lead to system malfunction or degraded reliability. Its use as a replacement for the original component is not advised.
