1. LM324M Substitution Conclusion
Direct substitution is not recommended. Although the LM324M is pin-compatible and exhibits identical quiescent current, its primary limitation lies in the narrower operating voltage range (3-32V) compared to the original part (2-36V). This may render it non-functional in systems operating below 3V or above 32V. More critically, it lacks AEC-Q100 automotive qualification, making it unsuitable for automotive or other high-reliability applications where compliance is mandatory—posing significant quality and reliability risks. Additionally, certain AC parameters such as slew rate and gain-bandwidth product are not clearly specified, suggesting potential performance degradation relative to the original component.
2. LM124D Substitution Conclusion
Substitution is conditionally acceptable, but circuit compatibility must be carefully evaluated. The LM124D offers advantages in bandwidth (1.2 MHz) and slew rate (0.4 V/µs) over the original part. However, several key differences exist: its output stage is differential, whereas the original device features a conventional single-ended output. This may prevent direct use in circuits not designed for differential signaling. Its operating voltage range (3-30V) is also narrower than that of the original, and its quiescent current (1.5 mA) is slightly higher. Like the LM324M, it does not claim AEC-Q100 certification and is therefore not suitable for automotive applications. For general industrial use where the circuit can accommodate a differential output, substitution may be considered.
