1. LM258AST Substitution Conclusion
Overall, the LM258AST is unsuitable as a direct replacement for the MC33078 in the vast majority of designs. The core performance gap between the two is significant. First, the LM258AST's gain-bandwidth product (1.1 MHz) and slew rate (0.6 V/µs) are substantially lower than those of the original part (16 MHz, 7 V/µs). This results in severe bandwidth limitation and waveform distortion when handling high-frequency or fast-changing signals, making it inadequate for speed-critical applications. Second, its input offset voltage (1 mV) is an order of magnitude higher than the original's (150 µV), introducing non-negligible error in DC or low-frequency precision amplification circuits. Although the LM258AST offers advantages in input bias current and quiescent power consumption, along with automotive-grade qualification, these benefits cannot compensate for its critical shortcomings in dynamic performance and precision. Therefore, it can only be considered for extremely low-speed, non-precision circuits where speed, bandwidth, and accuracy are not required.
2. LM2904ST Substitution Conclusion
Overall, the LM2904ST is an even less suitable replacement than the LM258AST and is essentially incapable of directly substituting the MC33078. Beyond sharing the LM258AST's severe deficiencies in gain-bandwidth product (700 kHz) and slew rate (0.6 V/µs), which severely limit its high-frequency response, the LM2904ST features a higher input offset voltage (2 mV). This introduces greater initial error in DC amplification scenarios, potentially necessitating additional nulling circuitry. While its low power consumption and wide supply voltage range are advantageous, in typical MC33078 application scenarios—such as professional audio, intermediate-frequency signal processing, and active filters—the dramatic reduction in dynamic performance (bandwidth and slew rate) is a decisive obstacle. This degradation would likely cause circuit malfunction or severe performance deterioration. Consequently, its use as a replacement is not recommended.
